We work to live and not the other way around. But, we often forget this and put our jobs ahead of our basic needs. Is this something that you do too?
Doing too much of everything can destroy you. Eating too much will make you fat, sleeping too much will make you lazy and working too much will take over your life. While it’s important to care about your career, there is always a limit as to how far you can go. Working eight hours a day is more than enough if you also want to enjoy some alone time, with family and friends and do all of the things that make you happy. Spending too much time at work will have you questioning your sanity.

If you are wondering whether you are giving too much of yourself to your job, here are some warning signs you need to be aware of.
1. You Can’t Talk About Anything Else
Your job has taken control over your life, and you know that because you can’t talk about anything else. When you are out with friends, the only discussion you care to chip into is work. In fact, you are probably the initiator of every conversation that has to do with it. This is because you have become passionate about what you are doing, which isn’t a bad thing per se. But, if you want to be a more interesting person and someone your friends would want to hang out with, you really need to find something else to care about.
2. You Have No Free Time
You know it all gets too much to handle when you feel that you have no free time for yourself. When you are working through your lunch time and don’t take at least a 5-minute walk to stretch your legs and let your mind relax for a bit, you are only causing yourself harm.
Also, if you often catch yourself working until late in the evening, this is a sign that you need to take a rest. Working too much is never the answer to a happy life. If you want a good work-life balance make room in your everyday schedule for activities and hobbies that you enjoy.
3. You Have No Goals Apart For Your Career
It feels great to have certain career plans in place, but it’s not healthy to only care about your career. Unless you decide to pursue other interests outside of work, your job will no longer excite you or fulfill you. While it’s ok to want that big promotion and the salary bonus your boss has promised to you, you shouldn’t hang on to that so tight. There’s life outside of work, and that’s what you should be focusing on.
4. You Can’t Quiet Your Mind
It seems like all that you ever do is think, think and think about work. Even when you are at home and trying to read your favourite book, you can’t concentrate because your mind wanders and can’t stop thinking about the upcoming deadline.
What you can do is distract your mind by keeping yourself busy with something else. An ideal activity should include a physical exercise that requires you to do something with your body and not just your mind – like reading a book. You can always go out for a walk, or go to the gym.
5. You Change Your Entire Attitude
Work has become your life, and everything that happens outside of work is caused by your obsession with it. If your job is all that you can think about, it inevitably becomes all that you care about, and you end up getting angry, upset and stressed out when things don’t go your way. Then you feel guilty about starting a fight with your spouse just because you became frustrated about something that happened at work. Does this sound fair? I don’t think so. You should never allow your job be more than just a part of the puzzle called life.

When work gets too much to handle, you know you are doing something wrong. Putting priorities in your life will help you realise what really matters and what doesn’t.
